Sheffield of India

Once upon a time Howrah District was famous as the "Sheffield of India". This title was mainly due to the foundry industry that flourished on the banks of the Ganges river in Howrah.

Formation in 1974

To support Micro, Small & Medium Foundry Industries, the Howrah Foundry Association was formed in 1974 through the dedicated efforts of Late Sudhangshu Basu, Late Joydeb Chandra Dey, Late Sunil Kumar Kundu, Late Debabrata Sett, Late Sunil Mukherjee and Late Dr. Subodh Chandra Ghosal.

Recognition & Growth

Under the presidency of Sri Sandip Dutt, the association gained recognition as one of the leading Associations in India, strengthening industrial collaboration and development.

Industrial Contribution

Foundry products are supplied to Jute Industry, Railways, Post & Telegraph, Defence, Ship, Tea leaf cutting machines, various plants and Agricultural industry as spare parts. Manhole covers and rainwater pipes are supplied worldwide.

Government Support & Modernization

For the past 50 years, this organization has worked to secure government benefits for its members. Through awareness camps, modernization is encouraged in areas like Energy Efficiency, Pollution Control and Quality Control.

Social Responsibility

The association has supported employees and their families through medical services including 6000 Covid vaccines, Eye camps, and free spectacles.

Foundry Park Development

Due to various Government regulations, existing foundries are unable to undergo modernization. Therefore, the Government and the Howrah Foundry Association jointly initiated the acquisition of approximately 50 acres of land in Amta Kurit Mouza to create a Foundry Park, which is now complete.
